Not identifying with upcoming thoughts during meditation is easier if the thought isn't about my meditation. Any tips to overcome these as well?
In order to not identify with a thought…simply become aware of that thought. For example: You are sitting in meditation and focusing on breathing and the thought arises…I need to stay focused. Become aware of that thought, meaning look at it. It helps to repeat that thought slowly….I need to stay focused. Ask yourself…what does that mean? ….I need to stay focused? Say to yourself: I need to stay focused is just a thought. It is neither good nor bad …. it is just a thought.
Then focus back on breathing.
When you really look at a thought and take it apart, it disappears into the nothingness where it came from.
There is nothing “wrong” with you becoming aware that you are the one thinking those thoughts, but instead of thinking it is you….realize that it is your mind that is thinking them. In Truth…you are simply the witness to mind ……thinking them.
The goal of meditation is not to focus on an object, but to slow mind down enough to actually become aware of thought, so that the Self can be realized as a witness to mind.
